I tell Paul to just say whatever pops into his head as a means to achieve "small talk." If one person says something, just say the first thing your brain thinks of -- free-associate. But this approach gives mixed results. Sometimes Paul says really weird things. His associative thinking leads down odd paths. So when he believes people are thinking he's weird, he'll says, "Sorry... I'm weird. Sometimes I just say whatever pops into my head because I'm too awkward and bad at small talk. So then I try and I do a bad job. Sorry... Hee-hee...Sorry..." At that point, usually whoever he was talking to smiles awkwardly and walks away.
